Esinhart, John

ESINHART, John (1837-c. 1901) was born in Quebec province on 27 March 1833 and practised in Montreal, Que. His name first appears in the Montreal Directory in 1862 and the following year he is listed in partnership with Jean B. Tison. Their business relationship was shortlived, and from 1864 until 1893 he is listed as an architect under his own name but few references to his work there can be found. In 1867 he designed a tenement block for H. Duclos, Upper St. Urbain Street, MONTREAL, QUE., and on that same street he executed a plan for an elaborate residence for William Babcock, MONTREAL, QUE., 1867-68. This major work was described as an 'effective design...commanding elegance and economy' with a novel circular bow window running the entire height of three floors (Montreal Herald, 22 March 1867, Supplement, 6, descrip.). He became a registered member of the Province of Quebec Association of Architects in 1891 and attended their first Convention in that year (C.A.B., iv, 1891, 56; inf. Canada, 1901 Census, Montreal No. 177, Saint Louis Ward, B-5, 3).
