Zimmerman, William

ZIMMERMAN, William (1874-c. 1914), was born in Germany and came to the United States after 1900. He began his practise in Minot, North Dakota in 1904 where he later formed a partnership with J.C. Woodruff in early 1909. However, in July 1909 it was announced that Zimmerman, Woodruff and another local Minot architect F.D. McGulpin had "...consolidated and enlarged their territory", with offices in both Minot, N.D. and in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (Ward County Independent [Minot], 8 July 1909, 20). This was one of the first attempts to created an international architectural practise in both the USA and in Canada, but within weeks, Zimmerman was working under his own name in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan where it was noted that he had '......received a large patronage in the province for the past twelve months' (Moose Jaw Evening Times, 20 July 1909, 8).

The building boom in the city was instrumental in providing Zimmerman with a variety of commercial, institutional and residential commissions; he was among the first to introduce a classically inspired style to important civic works such as the City Market (1910), the Isolation Hospital (1910), and the Royal George Hotel (1911). He may also have been the architect for the Russell Block (1910), executed in Hebron brick imported from North Dakota and a convincing display of the growing influence of the Chicago School on contemporary prairie architecture in Canada. In 1911 his scheme for a new Public School in an "American style' located on The Crescent in Moose Jaw was awarded First Premium in an architectural competition, but his winning design was not built (Moose Jaw Evening Times, 7 April 1911, 1, descrip.; 22 June 1911, 8, illus.). He left Moose Jaw in 1914 and no references to his work after this time have been found (inf. Saskatchewan Association of Architects; inf. Gordon Fulton, Ottawa)
