Murray, William George

MURRAY, William George (1876-1954) was born in Scotland and was brought to Canada by his family at age three. He articled with the London, Ont. firm of McBride, Jones & Farncomb in 1893-4 and worked as an assistant to Herbert E. Matthews in 1895-97. He moved to United States in 1898 to work as a designer in the studio of Louis B. Tiffany (from 1898-99), and then joined the office of the prominent American architect George B. Post (in 1899) and Ashburton Moore (in 1900-01) in New York City. He returned to London, Ont. in 1904 and formed a partnership with Matthews, but their office was dissolved within a year and Murray continued to work under his own name for the duration of his career, designing many churches and private homes throughout southwestern Ontario. His ecclesiastical designs were never innovative, often following a predictable formula of similar elements arranged and rearranged in somewhat bleak compositions that lacked the refinement and attention to detail found in the work of his contemporaries such as J. Francis Brown of Toronto or Hutton & Souter in Hamilton. Murray retired in late 1951 and died in London on 9 February 1954 (obituary in the Free Press [London], 9 Feb. 1954, 1; inf. from Annmarie Adams, London; inf.
