McCartney, Allan Edward

McCARTNEY, Allan Edward (c. 1851-1901) began his work as a civil engineer, architect, and land surveyor in Vancouver, B.C. before 1881 and with his partner Paul Marmette is best known for his Gothic design of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Richard Street, Vancouver, 1886-87 (demol.). He was born in the Bahamas, West Indies and travelled with his family to New York and Montreal before moving to British Columbia where he found employment as an engineer at the Hastings Sawmill. No information can be found on his early education and training, but it is known that he was 'a comparatively young man' when he died in Vancouver on 8 May 1901.
