Parker, Richard Barry

PARKER, Richard Barry (1867-1947) and his partner Raymond Unwin (1863-1940) of England were known to have executed only one project in Canada, that for a residence in Montreal located on Pine Avenue near Peel Street, MONTREAL, QUE., for Dr. Fred P. Walton, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at McGill University (A. Stuart Gray, Edwardian Architecture, 1985, 276-7, biography and list of works). Parker & Unwin are best known for their housing plans which they developed in 1903 for the Garden City community of Letchworth, England, originally conceived by Ebenezer Howard. They also prepared the plans for the influential Hampstead Garden Suburb in north London in 1905-07. An extensive collection of drawings prepared by the firm, including those for the Walton Residence in Montreal, are now held at the Letchworth Museum in England.
