Redmond, George Denman

REDMOND, George Denman (1883 - c. 1934) was born in London, Ont. on 17 November 1883 and attended Wellesley Public School in Toronto. He did not obtain a formal educaton in architecture but instead trained in architectural offices in New York in 1902-07, then returned to Toronto where he was employed as a draftsman in the City Architect's Department. It was there that he met Neil Beggs, another City employee; both decided to leave the Department in 1912 and start their own office in Toronto. They were successful in obtaining some of the first commissions for multi-storey apartment blocks in the city, including The Ernescliffe (1913), the largest apartment block in Toronto at that time. In mid-1913 their collaboration ended with both partners opening separate offices. Redmond continued to practise in Toronto until 1934 (inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects).
