Tetley, Charles Reginald

TETLEY, Charles Reginald (1886-1960) was born in England on 16 April 1886, son of Charles W. Tetley and Blanche Younghusband. He was educated at Haileybury College and served his articles with Harry Quick of Coventry in 1903-07 while taking part-time studies in architectural design at the Coventry School of Art. Tetley emigrated to Canada in 1907 and obtained a position in the Montreal office of George T. Hyde (in 1907-09) and later worked for Ross & MacFarlane (in 1909-12) where he gained first hand knowledge of new methods of multi-storey reinforced concrete construction. In 1913 he opened his own office in Montreal and maintained a successful practice for more than forty years. He had a special interest in industrial architecture but was equally adept in his handling of the Collegiate Gothic style which he employed with skill in the design of the Argyle School, Westmount (1934). He also executed a significant Chateau-style railway station at Lacolle, Que., built 1930 and still standing. He was nominated as a Fellow of the Royal Inst. of British Architects in 1926, and held influential positions on the Westmount Architectural Commission and on the Advisory Board of Architects for the City of Outremont. Tetley retired from practise in 1957 and died in Montreal on 21 July 1960 (obit. & port. Gazette [Montreal], 23 July 1960, 15; biog. & port. in the National Reference Book, ii, 1927-28, 440; biog. W. Wood, The Storied Province of Quebec, 1932, 282; R.I.B.A., Directory of British Architects 1834-1914, 2001, ii, 778). A photographic portrait of C.R. Tetley was published in La Presse [Montreal], 23 Dec. 1926, p. 18)
