Smyth, Hugh Middleton

SMYTH, Hugh Middleton (1882-1951), partner with William Laing, was active in Winnipeg, Man., in Lethbridge, Alta. and in Calgary, Alta where the firm prospered in the pre-WWI construction boom (see list of works under Laing & Smyth). Both partners were natives of Scotland; Smyth himself was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on 30 November 1882 and was a pupil of D. & J. MacMillan, Architects in Aberdeen and later worked in London, Engl. for five years before emigrating to Canada in 1908. Smyth remained in Calgary until 1914, but no references to his activity after this period can be found (biog. in H.J. Boam, Twentieth Century Impressions of Canada, 1914, 735-6). After 1917 he moved to Takoma Park, Maryland (near Washington, D.C.) to continue his career, and later died there on 23 August 1951 (obituary Evening Star (Washington D.C.), 24 Aug. 1951, 2)
