Wright, William S.

WRIGHT, William S. (1868-1939), son of James Wright, was born in Montreal and likely trained under his father before entering a partnership with him in 1890 (see list of works under James Wright & Son). He joined the Province of Quebec Association of Architects on 5 September 1891 and continued to work in his father's office. By 1900 he had joined the office of E. & W.S. Maxwell, a leading firm in Montreal, and was recorded as visiting Winnipeg to supervise the construction of their design for the new C.P.R. Railway Station there, to cost $750,000 (Winnipeg Tribune, 16 March 1900, 5). Wright later commenced practice under his own name and specialized in the design of apartments blocks which were erected in neighbourhoods in the City of Montreal, Outremont and in Westmount. Many of these were designed in an eclectic style inspired by Beaux-Arts precedents and featured elaborate stone detailing, patterned brickwork, projecting bay windows, and arched entranceways off the street. Wright retired in 1936 and died in Montreal on 16 February 1939 (obituaries in the Gazette [Montreal], 17 Feb. 1939, 14; Montreal Star, 17 Feb. 1939, 20)
