Alpaugh, Norman Walton

ALPAUGH, Norman Walton (c. 1885-1954) arrived in Toronto in 1906 and worked in the office of Robert J. Edwards for two years while at the same time accepting commissions for private residences. In 1908 he prepared a design for a duplex house for Samuel G. Near, Bellair Street, TORONTO, ONT. (C.R., xxii, 16 Dec. 1908, 22, illus.) and published a skillfully rendered perspective drawing for an Edwardian house in the Rosedale neighbourhood of Toronto (C.R., xxiii, 6 Jan. 1909, 31, illus.) He formed a partnership with Charles M. Willmot in 1909 (see list of works under Willmot & Alpaugh). It appears he moved to Regina, Sask in 1911, where he was in a short-lived partnership lasting two months with S.J. Tripp (see works under Tripp & Alpaugh). By 1912 he had left Canada and moved to Los Angeles, Calif. where he is best known for his Beaux-Arts designs for The Town House Hotel, the Asbury Apartments, and the Park-Wilshire Hotel. In 1924 his elaborate rendering for a large residence for George Cole (presumably in Los Angeles) was published in the architectural journal Pencil Points [New York], v, Oct. 1924, Plate xl, and credited to the partnership of Russell & Alpaugh. He later collaborated with the architect S. Charles Lee on the design of over 300 movie theatres for the Fox West Coast chain of theatres. Alpaugh died in Los Angeles, California on 15 November 1954 (obituary Los Angeles Times, 17 Nov. 1954, 11; obit. Michigan Society of Architects Monthly Bulletin, xxix, Jan. 1955).
