J.S. Craig was born in Moose Jaw, Sask. on 17 December 1912 and briefly attended the University of Toronto in 1929-31 before moving to Winnipeg to study at the School of Architecture at the Univ. of Manitoba where he graduated in 1934, receiving the R.A.I.C. Gold Medal for his student work. He trained under W.L. Somerville in Toronto (in 1935-39), then relocated to Peterborough to work as a draftsman in the office of Walter R.L. Blackwell in 1939. From 1940 to 1945 he worked as a staff architect for the Ford Motor Car Co., and was invited by W.R.L. Blackwell to form a new partnership in 1945 (see list of works under Blackwell & Craig). They were joined by a talented young German architect Eberhard Zeidler in 1954, and their office name was changed to Craig & Zeidler in 1957.

An illustrated essay on the early work of their firm in Peterborough from 1945 onward was published in 1992 in the monograph by Christian W. Thomsen entitled Eberhard Zeidler: In Search of Human Space, pp. 52-63, illus. James S. Craig died in Peterborough on 21 July 1995 (death notice Globe & Mail [Toronto], 22 July 1995, E 10; biog. in Who's Who in Canada, 1961-63). J.S. Craig should not be confused with another architect ""James H. Craig** (1888-1954), who was active in Toronto during this period.
