Hodson, William H.

HODSON, William H. (1832 -1892), of Montreal, Que. first advertised his services as an architect there in May 1863 (Montreal Transcript, 23 May 1863, 2, advert.). According to his obituary in the journal called Canadian Architect & Builder, he was born in Manchester, England, served an apprenticeship in that city, and then emigrated to North America "....sometime in the fifties, practising with great success in New York and Brooklyn" (C.A.B., v, Oct. 1892, 100). His name first appears in the Montreal City Directory in 1861 (where he is mistakenly listed as 'William H. Hodgson [sic], Architect'), and many of his early commissions were for modest residential and commercial buildings erected for their owners or for real estate speculators. His signed drawings for the Papineau Market (c. 1870) reveal a dreary and unadorned work which lacks the architectural distinction of other High Victorian landmarks in Montreal of the 1870's, and his apparent lack of interest in, or sympathy for, the fashionable architectural styles is also evident in the austere design for the Medical Faculty Building for Bishop's College (1872). Hodson died in Montreal on 22 September 1892 (death notice in Montreal Star, 23 Sept. 1892, 7; obituary in C.A.B., v, Oct. 1892, 100; biographical note in C.A.B., v, Nov. 1892, page vi). The successor to his practice was Henry A. Jones. William H. Hodson of Montreal should not be confused with the Ottawa architect William Hodgson (1827-1904).
