Bujold, Emilien

BUJOLD, Emilien (1921-2012), active in Montreal, Que from 1949 onward, and later in association with the Drummondville architect Paul Labranche. Born in St. Charles de Caplan, Quebec on 19 February 1921, his family moved to Montreal in 1923 where his father later served as Construction Superintendent of the main buildings of the new campus of the University of Montreal, designed by Ernest Cormier in 1927 and constructed from 1928 to 1931, and later completed in 1941-43. It is likely that the young Emilien Bujold became familiar with the world of building construction and architecture when his father took him on site visits to the campus, and may have introduced him to Cormier, and later persuaded his son to pursue a career in architecture.

Bujold enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Montreal in 1940, and later won the Louis Quevillon Prize in 1942 (Gazette [Montreal], 12 June 1942, 20, prize list). He was a talented delineator and designer, and his student design for “ A Museum of Native Indian Civilization” was published in the RAIC Journal, xxii, April 1945, 83, illus. & descrip. The following year, in 1946, his thesis project for “ A Laboratory for a National Agricultural School” was highly commended and published in the same journal, xxiii, April 1946, 91, illus. & descrip. For his effort, he was awarded the R.A.I.C. Medal for the most talented student in his graduating class at the Univ. of Montreal. During his summer training, he worked in the office of Lucien Parent (1893-1956), and assisted him with the preparation of sketches and drawings of St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, and for plans there of Brother Andre’s tomb and crypt. After graduation he continued his training in the Montreal office of Roland Dumais (1910-82).

In 1949 he formed a business relationship with Paul LaBranche, and they opened two branch offices, one in Montreal (under the supervision of Bujold), and one in Drummondville (operated by LaBranche). They continued to collaborate on projects, but many of the designs appear to be from the hand of Bujold, who also operated under his own name. After the end of their collaboration in 1962, Bujold formed a partnership with Guy Blain and Roland O. Beaudouin, as Blain, Beauvoir & Bujold, Architects. In 1971 Bujold accepted the appointment as Supervising Architect in the Montreal office of the federal Dept. of Public Works, and remained in that position until his retirement in 1990. Bujold died in Montreal on 18 May 2012 (inf. Josseline Bujold, Montreal; Martin Bergevin, Drummondville). A collection of original presentation drawings by Bujold, as well as sets of blueprints for many projects listed below by Bujold & LaBranche, is now held at the Societe d’histoire de Drummond in Drummondville, Fonds Emilian Bujold, Acc. P 286).
