Doucet, Emmanuel Arthur

DOUCET, Emmanuel Arthur (1888-1960), an American-born architect active in Montreal, Que. for nearly forty years. He was a native of Merrimac, Massachusetts, born there on 16 September 1888, and was brought to Canada by his family after 1900. Doucet graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in 1912; one of his classmates at that school was J. Albert Morissette, with whom he formed a partnership later that year. They collaborated for two years, but the events of WWI interrupted their practise, and no references to the work of Doucet have been found until 1922 when he re-opened an office in Montreal under his own name. He devoted much of his career to residential and commercial projects, but he is best known for the eclectic designs for Notre Dame de Victoire Roman Catholic Church (1925-26), and for his Renaissance Revival design of the Granada Movie Theatre (1928-29), in which he collaborated with the local decorator and stylist Emmanuel Briffa. Doucet retired after 1950 and died in Montreal on 11 June 1960 (obituary La Presse [Montreal], 14 June 1960, 47; biog. and port. Biographies Canadiennes Francaises, 1926, 318; inf.
