Forbes, Gordon

FORBES, Gordon (c. 1800- 1833), an early architect active in Montreal, Quebec as a master builder, carpenter and architect who was credited with the design of the Theatre Royal, St. Paul Street, MONTREAL, QUE., 1825 (Newton Bosworth, Hochelega Depicta, 1839, 150, 152-53, illus. & descrip.). His nephew was Rev. Damase Dandurand, a Roman Catholic priest and architect of Ottawa, and it is said that Dandurand learned the profession of architecture from Forbes (Winnipeg Tribune, 24 March 1917, 12, interview with Dandurand). Forbes died in Montreal on 17 September 1833 and was later buried in the cemetery at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Montreal.
