Heward, Stephen Augustus

HEWARD, Stephen Augustus (1868-1958) of Toronto was born there on 28 November 1868 and educated in England and Switzerland. After returning to Toronto in 1888 he joined the firm of Strickland & Symons in 1889 and there met Eden Smith, who convinced Heward to continue his studies and training in London, England. In 1892 Heward moved there and worked for Sir Ernest George, a master of the mannered Edwardian style, and later for Simpson & Thomas. After returning to Toronto in 1896 he formed a partnership with W.A. Langton, but their practise was shortlived and Heward opened an office under his own name in 1897. Active until 1900 he later abandoned the profession, choosing instead a career in the Canadian military where he obtained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after service during WWI. Heward died at Orillia on 6 August 1958 (inf. Stephen A. Otto, Toronto).
