Smart, John Walker

SMART, John Walker (1872-1941), a native of Perth, Scotland, was active in Winnipeg, Man. from 1911 to 1923. Born in Perth on 3 August 1872, he was the son of the local architect James Smart, and trained under his father in 1888-92. He then worked as an assistant to Peddie & Kinnear in Edinburgh (in 1892-93), and with McLuckie & Walker of Stirling (in 1893-94), and for his father James Smart in 1895-1903. When his father died in February 1903, John W. started his own firm in Perth called J. Smart & Son, Architects (The Architects & Surveyors Directory [London], 1907, 183, list of architects in Perth).

For unknown reasons, he decided to emigrate to Canada in late 1911 and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He joined the Manitoba Association of Architects in 1911, but did not operate an independent office. Instead, he spent the next twelve years as an Associate in the office of J.H.G. Russell in Winnipeg, a leading architect in that city. In 1923, while ending his term as President of the Manitoba Association of Architects, he made a decision to leave Canada and moved to Alhambra, Calif., near Los Angeles (Manitoba Free Press [Winnipeg], 9 Jan. 1923, 4). He worked briefly in the offices of Walker & Eisen, Architects, and with Kenneth McDonald Jr., and then Smart opened his own architectural office there in October 1923 (Pasadena Evening Post, 27 Oct. 1923, 2, biog.). He had a successful career as an architect in the Los Angeles region, completing commissions for residential, commercial and educational buildings which he invariably designed in a Spanish Mission style. Smart continued to live and work in Alhambra, Calif. until after 1935, and later died there on 15 July 1941 (obituary Pasadena Post, 17 July 1941, 3; obit. Winnipeg Tribune, 22 July 1941, 18; obit. R.A.I.C. Journal, xviii, Nov. 1941, 192; biog. R.I.B.A. [London], Directory of British Architects 1834-1914, 2001, Vol. 2, 631).
