Michie, Robert

MICHIE, Robert (1879- c. 1911), active in Calgary, Alta. where he was in partnership with Leo Dowler (see list of works under Dowler & Michie). Born in Cullen, Co. Banffshire, Scotland in January 1879, he was educated there and likely trained in the profession before emigrating to Canada in 1906. He settled in Alberta and was invited by Dowler to form a partnership in Calgary in early 1907. Their firm specialised in the design of large commercial blocks including the Christie Bros. Block (1907), the Robinson & Linton Block (1908), the Blow Block (1908), and the McNaughton Block (1909). Their partnership was dissolved in 1910 and Michie appears to have practised in Calgary under his own name for a brief period. The name of “Robert Michie, Architect, R.A.A.”, with John L. Anderson as Superintendent, appeared in the Calgary City Directory, 1910, 64. He left Calgary in late 1910, or early 1911, and may have moved to British Columbia. He may be the same “Robert Michie” who died at Tranquille Hospital in B.C. on 23 June 1914.
