Born in Aberdeen, Scotland in May 1867, he was educated there and trained with James Souttar (1840-1921), a prominent architect in Aberdeen. Shand was recorded as the architect of three residential projects in that city in 1886-87 (Aberdeen City Archives, Plans Committee Minutes for the City of Aberdeen, 1886, 1887), but he declared personal bankruptcy in early 1887 (Aberdeen Journal, 26 May 1887, 2, with court proceedings against Charles K. Shand). He emigrated to the United States in late 1887 and settled in Washington State where he worked in architectural offices in Seattle and Tacoma, as well as the staff architect for the Oregon & Washington Railway Co. at Seattle.. He then moved to northern Michigan about 1895 and opened an office in Houghton and in nearby Calumet. One of his employees in Calumet was George D. Eastman; the following year both moved to Seattle, Wash. and opened an office there as Shand & Eastman (City Directory of Seattle, 1904, 111). In 1905 Shand opened an office in Vancouver, B.C. in partnership with John S. Pearce (C.A.B., xviii, June 1905, 96), but within a year he was again working alone, maintaining offices in Seattle and Vancouver until at least 1911. He returned to the copper mining area of northern Michigan and Minnesota after 1910, practising in the towns of Virginia, Minn., and in St. Cloud, Minn. in 1920-35, and in Hibbing, Minn. in 1935 to 1945. Shand died in South Hibbing on 22 October 1945 (obit. Hibbing Daily Tribune, 22 October 1945; obit. Minneapolis Star-Journal; 23 Oct. 1945, 11).
