Saunders, Frederick Frank

SAUNDERS, Frederick Frank (1873-1960), active in Toronto, Ont. from January 1901 onward, and later in partnership with Robert J. Edwards (see list of works under Edwards & Saunders). Born in Oshawa, Ont. on 12 July 1873 he was educated and trained in Toronto with Robert Ogilvie (in 1890-91), and articled with the firm of Edwards & Webster (in 1892-94). The following year he moved to Chicago, Ill. where he was in partnership with Russell B. Powell, in the firm of Powell & Saunders in 1895 (Chicago City Directory, 1895, 1405). In 1896 Saunders moved to New York City and worked for several architectural firms from 1896 to 1900 including Cody & See, for Howells & Stokes, for Stein & Roth, for Freeman & Hasselman, and for Grosvenor Atterbury. He returned to Toronto in late 1900 and opened an office there (C.A.B., xiii, Nov. 1900, 244). In 1907 he was invited by his former employer R. J. Edwards to join him in a partnership, but he appears to have also executed works under his own name during this time, including a fine Beaux-Arts design for the Carnegie Library in Stouffville, Ont. (1914). He later became an expert in the planning and layout of pure milk production facilities located in Toronto, London, St. Catharines and elsewhere. Saunders resigned from the O.A.A. in August 1951 and died in Toronto on 31 October 1960 (death notice Toronto Star, 1 Nov. 1960, 28; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects).
