Sherwood, Edward George

SHERWOOD, Edward George (1861-1948) was active in Winnipeg, Man. from 1906 to 1922. Born in Co. Dorset, England in May 1861, he was baptised in nearby Hampreston, Dorset on 21 July 1861. He was the son of a prominent contractor in his native town, and took up the trade of carpenter and practical workman. He arrived in Manitoba in 1897 and worked for five years as assistant to George C. Browne, a leading architect in Winnipeg, and supervised the construction of the Fort Garry Court Apartments while working for Browne. Sherwood opened his own office there in 1906 and remained active until 1922, but no information can be found on his architectural activity after this date (biog. and list of works Winnipeg Saturday Post, 8 June 1912, 38; inf. Barry Elmer, Calgary). He later moved to British Columbia and died in Victoria B.C. on 21 November 1948.
