RICHMOND, Edward Isaac (1908-1982), one of the most prolific designers of apartment towers in Toronto after WWII. He was born in Oshak, Radom, Russia on 27 November 1908 and emigrated to Canada with his family before 1920. He was educated and trained in Toronto and was briefly in partnership with Benjamin Kaminker in 1933-37 (see works under Kaminker & Richmond). He employed a progressive modernist style in his early commissions, a notable example of which was the Pringle & Booth Studio Building, 1941 (demol. c. 1965), with its streamlined facade of glass block and steel casement windows, creating a showcase for the services of the commercial photographers working within. In the postwar era, the largest and most significant development by the firm was the Palace Pier Tower (1974-77), Lakeshore Boulevard West at the Humber River, TORONTO, ONT (Canadian Building, xxiii, Oct. 1973, 82, descrip.). Constructed to a height of 46 storeys, it was, at the time of its completion, one of the tallest residential towers in Ontario, exceeded only by the Manulife Tower by Clifford & Lawrie (at 51 storeys in height). A second tower, a twin to the North Tower building, was constructed on the Palace Pier site in 1989-91. Richmond died in Toronto on 11 November 1982 (death notice Globe & Mail [Toronto], 12 Nov. 1982, C 10)
