Gariepy, Joseph Raoul

GARIEPY, Joseph Raoul (1880-1938) was active in Montreal, Que. where he served as chief assistant, and later as partner, to Theodore Daoust, a leading architect in that city. Born in Montreal on 16 November 1880 he was educated at Ste. Brigide Academy but does not appear to have received any formal education in architecture. Instead, his knowledge of design and construction was obtained under his mentor Theodore Daoust, in whose office he worked as an apprentice from October 1898 until 1903, then as chief assistant in 1903-06, and finally in a partnership in 1906-12. In 1910 he collaborated with Daoust to create an elaborate medieval design for the new Ice Palace, Esplanade Avenue at Duluth Avenue, MONTREAL, Que. (La Presse [Montreal], 8 Jan. 1910, 11, illus.; F. Anderes & A. Agranoff, Ice Palaces, 1983, 33, 43-5, illus. & descrip.).

By late 1912 he had left the office of Daoust and commenced practise under his own name. During the next twenty-five years he prepared plans for a variety of commercial, ecclesiastical and residential projects in Montreal, in southern Quebec, and in eastern Ontario. His most notable works include the elaborate Beaux-Arts designs for public theatres such as the Holman Theatre (1917), and the Rialto Theatre (1923-24). In his scheme for the Holman Theatre, Garipey introduced a sweeping arch to the facade which fronted onto Ste. Catherine Street West. His design for the Rialto Theatre was even more elaborate, with a formally composed facade which drew inspiration from the monumental work of Charles Garnier and his design for the Paris Opera House. By 1930, Gariepy had adopted a new style of stripped modernism to his work, best seen in his plans for the extensive additions to St. Luke's Roman Catholic Hospital, St. Denis Street (1931-32). His interest in the emerging Art Deco style was also evident in his refined design for the Montreal East City Hall (1937).

His promising career ended abruptly on 12 May 1938 when he died suddenly at his residence in Montreal (obit. La Presse [Montreal], 13 May 1938, 24; Gazette [Montreal], 13 May 1938, 9; obit. Contract Record [Toronto], li, 25 May 1938, 27; biog. & port. in Biographies Canadiennes Francaises, 1925, 91; R. Hamilton, Prominent Men of Canada, 1931-32, 304). An early photographic portrait of Gariepy can be found in Montreal Old & New, 1914, 448. A list of more than thirty of his architectural projects, including several not included below, can be found in Biographies Canadiennes Francaises, 1933, 202-03.
