Ellis, James Augustus

ELLIS, James Augustus (1856-1935), a remarkably prolific architect from Toronto, Ont. and an acknowledged expert in the design of educational buildings. He was active in the following firms

James A. Ellis, Meaford, Ont. 1886
James A. Ellis, Port Arthur, Ont. 1887-89
Forster & Ellis, Port Arthur, Ont. 1887-89 (with J.C. Forster of Owen Sound)
James A. Ellis, Toronto Junction, West Toronto, 1890 – May 1897
Simpson & Ellis, Toronto, June 1897 to. October 1898 (with Henry Simpson)
James A. Ellis, Toronto Junction, Nov. 1898 to 1906
Ellis & Connery, Toronto, 1906 to 1914 (with William Connery)
Ellis & Ellis, Toronto 1915 to 1927 (with C. Howard Ellis)

His works can be found throughout southern and central Ontario, as well as at the Lakehead in northern Ontario and as far west as Alberta and Saskatchewan. Ellis was born in St. Vincent Township, Grey County, near Meaford, Ont. on 2 March 1856 and in his early life he served an apprenticeship in the building trades. He worked briefly for the Law Co. furniture factory, and later served as manager at the James Cleland Furniture Co. in Meaford. Ellis may have received his early training as an architect in the office of Julian Forster, another local architect whose office was located in Owen Sound, situated just 17 miles to the west; both Ellis and Forster were to later form a partnership in 1887, but their collaboration was short-lived (see list of works under Forster & Ellis).

Ellis moved to northern Ontario in 1887 and opened an office in Port Arthur where he became one of the first professional architects to practise in that region, and he was successful in obtaining at least ten major commissions for commercial blocks and hotels in that town. In early 1890 he moved to West Toronto Junction, a suburban village of Toronto, and successfully developed a list of local clientele for institutional, residential, ecclesiastical, industrial and commercial projects. In June 1897 he formed another partnership, this time with Henry Simpson, but it too was a brief one, and their business was dissolved in October 1898 (see list of works under Simpson & Ellis).

By 1900, he had completed more than 30 projects in the Toronto Junction and Weston neighbourhoods of West Toronto. He favoured the Romanesque Revival style in his early work, best seen in his bold design for Humberside Collegiate (1893). From late 1898 to 1906 Ellis worked under his own name, then he and William Connery of Toronto formed a new partnership which remained active for the next six years until 1914. By 1910 however, Ellis had fully embraced the Beaux-Arts style, employing a formal symmetry evident in virtually all of his designs for school buildings in Ontario and western Canada. Carefully composed, the elevational treatment of these educational landmarks was highlighted by elaborate stone porticos and entrances which were inspired by classical precedent, best seen in his designs for the High School in Oshawa (1909), and for Parkhill Public School in Calgary (1912).

In 1915 Ellis invited his son C. Howard Ellis to form yet another partnership, called Ellis & Ellis, Architects, but the untimely death of his son at an early age in February 1922 forced James Ellis to continue to practise alone until 1927, even though he retained the original name of their firm. J.A. Ellis retired during the following year (Construction [Toronto], xxi, March 1928, 108). Ellis died at Parry Sound, Ont. on 27 June 1935 and was later buried at Meaford, Ont. (obituary The Globe [Toronto], 29 June 1935, 12; The Express [Meaford], 1 July 1935; obit. Engineering & Contract Record [Toronto], xlix, 10 July 1935, 578; biog. & photographic portrait in G. WELLAND, ONT., Ward Five Public School, 1913. The Toronto office of Elllis & Connery was one of 16 firms from Ontario who submitted plans in this competition (Welland Tribune, 11 Dec. 1913, Section Two, p. 1, list of competitors). Their proposal was set aside and A.E. Nicholson of St. Catharines was selected as the winner.
KITCHENER, ONT., The firm of Ellis & Ellis was one of 4 designers who were asked to submit plans for the new Collegiate Institute & Technical School at Kitchener in 1919 (News Record [Kitchener], 23 Dec. 1919, 6). The winner was Stephen B. Coon & Son of Toronto, and his design was later built in 1922-23.
TORONTO, ONT., John Ross Robertson Public School, Glengrove Avenue, 1919. The firm of Ellis & Ellis were one of 21 architects who submitted designs in this competition for new school buildings for the Toronto Board of Education. Their design, presented in Italian Renaissance style, employed the same formal symmetry used in all of their earlier educational commissions, and was published in the journal Construction [Toronto], xii, July 1919, 213-14, 216, illus. & descrip. Their submission was passed over and David R. Franklin was declared as the winner.
