Hazelgrove & Lithwick 1948-57 (with Sidney Lithwick)
Hazelgrove, Lithwick & Lambert, 1958-60

Born in London, England on 10 June 1884, he entered the office Charles Barry & Son in 1899 and served a four-year apprenticeship under Charles Barry (1823-1900) and his son Charles Edward Barry (1855-1937). From 1903 to 1906 Hazelgrove attended classes at the Architectural Association in London while working as an assistant in Her Majesty’s Office of Works. In 1906-07 he rejoined the office of Charles Barry & Son, then emigrated to Canada in 1908. He settled in Montreal where he obtained a position as assistant with Edward & W.S. Maxwell, a leading architectural office in that city, and worked with them in 1908-10. He moved to Ottawa in early 1910, working as an assistant to Col. C.P. Meredith, who invited both Hazelgrove and Claude A. Findlay to form a new partnership (see list of works under Meredith, Findlay & Hazelgrove). From 1916 to 1918 Hazelgrove served with the British War Mission in Petawawa, Ontario, then resumed practise after WWI in a new partnership with Richard H. Millson and Cecil Burgess (see list works under Millson, Burgess & Hazelgrove). He later opened an office under his own name in 1928, and was joined by A. Kaye Mills in 1936. After WWII he formed another new partnership with Sidney Lithwick, and they were joined by F. Merrill Cameron in 1945, but with the sudden death of Cameron in April 1947 the firm reverted to the name of Hazelgrove & Lithwick. Hazelgrove remained active as an architect until poor health forced him to withdraw from professional activities in 1956.

Hazelgrove was highly respected in the architectural profession, and served as President of the Ontario Assoc. of Architects in 1939-40, and later as President of the Royal Architectural Inst. of Canada in 1948-49. In 1949 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Inst. of British Architects in London, England, and was presented with an Honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in February 1950. Hazelgrove died in Ottawa on 19 May 1958 (obituary article Ottawa Citizen, 20 May 1958, 4; Ottawa Journal, 20 May 1958, 9; obit. and port. R.A.I.C. The National Archives of Canada holds a substantial collection of nearly 30,000 architectural drawings from eight different firms which A.J. Hazelgrove was associated with from 1922 to 1986. This collection was donated to the National Archives in May 1987 by Sidney Lithwick, architect of Ottawa (NAC, Acc. 87803/2).
