COMPETITIONS

WINNIPEG, MAN., Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 1882. Shortly after his arrival in Winnipeg, Harris was one of number of architects who submitted plans in this competition (Robert C. Tuck, Gothic Dreams, 1978, 233, list of uncompleted works). The winner was Charles H. Wheeler of Winnipeg.
WINNIPEG, MAN., City Hall, 1883. While living and working in Winnipeg for a brief period in 1883, Harris could not resist the opportunity to submit a design in this important competition. He was one of seven competitors, and he must have impressed the Jury with his handsomely rendered drawings, because he was awarded the Third Prize, a significant achievement for an "outsider" from Nova Scotia (Morning Herald [Halifax], 11 Sept. 1883, 3). The winner was the Winnipeg firm of Barber & Barber.
MONTREAL, QUE., Board of Trade Building, 1891. Harris was one of several Canadian and American architects who submitted an entry in this competition, and he was said to have received First Prize of $300. for his design (Halifax Herald, 17 July 1899, 7). However, the Montreal jury was only willing to consider submissions from American architects, and the eventual winners were Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge of Boston.
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I., Roman Catholic Cathedral, Great George Street, 1892-93. Both W.C. Harris and Charles B. Chappell of Charlottetown were invited to submit plans for this landmark in 1892, and a detailed architectural description of the design by Harris was published in the Daily Examiner [Charlottetown], 17 Jan. 1893, p. 1 and 4. These designs were later set aside, and the project was handed to the Quebec City architect F.X. Berlinguet (inf. Harry Holman, Charlottetown).
AUBURN, N.Y., USA, Seymour Public Library, Genesee Street, 1898. Harris was among several architects from the USA and Canada who submitted an entry (Robert C. Tuck, Gothic Dreams, 1978, 233, list of uncompleted works). The winners were Carrere & Hastings from New York City.
SAINT JOHN, N.B., Carnegie Library, Hazen Avenue, 1903. Harris was one of several architects who prepared a design for this building (Robert C. Tuck, Gothic Dreams, 1978, 233, list of uncompleted works). The competition was won by G. Gordon Fairweather.
