COMPETITIONS

VICTORIA, B.C., James Bay Bridge, 1894. Parr submitted a design in the competition for a new bridge to James Bay, and for his effort he received the Second Premium (Vancouver Daily World, 22 June 1895, 8)
OLYMPIA, WASH., USA, State Capitol Building, 1894. Parr was one of several architects from Canada and the United States who submitted an entry in this major competition (Vancouver Daily World, 22 June 1895, 8). The competition was won by Ernest Flagg of New York, but construction of the winning design was halted after two years, and the project was completed by another American architect (H.R. Hitchcock, Temples of Democracy: The State Capitols of the U.S.A., 1976, 226)
VANCOUVER, B.C., Lord Roberts Public School, West End, 1900. Ten local architects submitted designs for the new West End School (also called Lord Roberts Public School), and Parr & Fee were awarded the commission (Province [Vancouver], 21 July 1900, 6).
VANCOUVER, B.C., Hotel Vancouver, 1900. Parr & Fee were one of six architectural firms from British Columbia who were invited by the C.P.R. head office in Montreal to submit designs for a new hotel (Province [Vancouver], 15 Oct. 1900, 7). It is unclear who won this competition, but the entry by Parr & Fee may have resulted in that firm receiving the commission in 1902 to design a major addition to the existing hotel (see item below)
VICTORIA, B.C., "Cary Castle", the Official Residence of the Lieut. Governor of British Columbia, 1901. Parr & Fee were one of nine architectural firms from British Columbia who submitted a design, and their scheme, signed with the nom de plume "Domus Consulis" was awarded 4th Prize of $75 (Province [Vancouver], 17 Jan. 1901, 1, with extensive description of the design by Parr & Fee; Peter Cotton, Vice-Regal Mansions of British Columbia, 1981, 72). The winners were Byrens & Sait, but their proposal was never built, and the B.C. Government later gave the commission to F.M. Rattenbury and Samuel Maclure.
VANCOUVER, B.C., major additions to the Hotel Vancouver, 1902. Parr & Fee were one of several local firms who submitted plans for this project. A perspective view of the elaborate 7 storey Romanesque Revival design by Parr & Fee was published as a full page plate in the Canadian Architect & Builder, xv, March 1902, illus. Their proposal was not built.
VANCOUVER, B.C., Vancouver High School, 1903. The office of Parr & Fee was one of seven firms invited to submit plans for the new High School in Fairview (Vancouver Daily World, 9 Sept. 1903, 2). The School Board later declared W.T. Whiteway as the winner.
