TAYLOR, Andrew Thomas (1850-1937), a leading architect in Montreal during the last two decades of the 19th C. from 1883 to 1904 before he returned to England. He was active in the following offices:

COMPETITIONS

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND. Municipal City Hall, 1881. Taylor collaborated with Henry Hall of London to submit an entry in this two stage competition. More than 100 entries were sent in by architects from England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Germany. The distinguished architect Charles Edward Barry selected eight finalists, including an elaborate Renaissance Revival design submitted by Hall & Taylor which was awarded Second Premium (Building News [London], xliii, 14 July 1882, 37-8, descrip.; 6 Oct. 1882, 414, descrip. & plate illus.; 20 Oct. 1882, 474 and plate illus.; British Architect [London], xviii, 8 Sept. 1882, 429, descrip. & plate illus.: Canadian Magazine of Science & Industrial Arts [Montreal], June 1881, 176-8, illus. & descrip.; S. Wagg, Architecture of Andrew Thomas Taylor, 2013, 19-22, illus.). The winner was William Young of London.
NEWBURY, ENGLAND, District Hospital, 1885. Taylor & Gordon were one of 120 entrants who sent in designs. Eight finalists were chosen by the juror Sir Alfred Waterhouse including the design submitted by Taylor & Gordon (Builder [London], xlviii, 24 Jan. 1885, 132). Henry G. Turner of London was declared the winner.
TORONTO, ONT., City Hall & Court House, 1885. During the first round of this civic competition, the Montreal firm of Taylor, Gordon & Bousfield competed against nearly 50 other architects from the United States and Canada for this important public building (Globe [Toronto], 16 March 1886, 8, list of competitors). All the entries were later set aside and a second competition of seven finalists was called in late 1886. Taylor complained publicly about the mismanagement of the first round and the flawed judging process, and refused to enter the second round. The eventual winner of the second competition was Edward J. Lennox.
MONTREAL, QUE., St. James Office Block, St. James Street, 1888. Five local firms submitted plans for this new seven storey office block on the site of the old St. James Methodist Church (Gazette [Montreal], 11 May 1888, 3). The winner was A.F. Dunlop.
MONTREAL, QUE., addition to the Merchants Bank, 1899. Taylor & Gordon were one of several entrants to submit plans for an addition of 4 storeys on the roof of the existing Merchants Bank, St. James Street. A perspective drawing and description of their design appeared in Canadian Architect & Builder, xii, Aug. 1899, 154 and plate illus. Edward Maxwell was later selected as winner.
MONTREAL, QUE., Liverpool, London & Globe Insurance Co., Place d'Armes at St. James Street, 1901. Taylor & Gordon were one of six firms invited to submit designs for this large office building (Gazette [Montreal], 7 Aug. 1901, 5; C.R., xii, 14 Aug. 1901, 3). The firm of Hutchison & Wood was later declared as the winner.
MONTREAL, QUE., Soldiers & Strathcona Monument, Dominion Square, 1903. Taylor received Second Prize for his proposal for a triumphal arch (C.A.B., xvi, Jan. 1903, xi). The first premium was awarded to the sculptor G.W. Hill
