Tanguay, Georges Emile

TANGUAY, Georges Emile (1858-1923), a remarkably prolific architect in Quebec City who specialised in ecclesiastical designs for the Roman Catholic church throughout the province of Quebec. He was responsible for more than 500 projects, completed under his own name, or in the following partnerships:

An extensive collection of original architectural drawings by G.E. Tanguay, and by the successor firms of Tanguay & Vallee, Tanguay & Lebon, and Tanguay & Chenevert, is now held at the Laval University Archives at Ste. Foy in Quebec City (LUA). A complete Finding Aid to the collection was published in 1980 by Parks Canada [Ottawa] entitled Inventaire des Dessins Architecturaux aux Archives de l'Universite Laval, Art & Archaeology Series, Vol. No. 31.

A detailed biography of Georges E. Tanguay has recently been published in The Dictionary of Canadian Biography, Vol. 16, 1931-40 (available online). A lengthy illustrated essay on the career and work of Georges E. Tanguay, and on Tanguay & Vallee, has recently been published and written by Prof. Marc Grignon of Laval University in Quebec City.
