Talbot, Eugene Michel

TALBOT, Eugene Michel (1858-1917) was a remarkably prolific architect active in Quebec City where he practised under his own name from before 1887 to 1906, and then in partnership with J. Arthur Thomas Dionne as Talbot & Dionne. Born in Levis, Que. he was educated in local schools and began to work as an architect in April 1882. It was not until September 1898 that he became a full member in the Province of Quebec Association of Architects, and he continued to produce dozens of designs for residential, commercial, institutional, industrial and ecclesiastical buildings in Quebec City and in several nearby towns. His best known work is that of the twin-towered Romanesque design of St. Roch Roman Catholic Church, Quebec City, 1914-15, with interiors later finished after his death by Louis N. Audet in 1923.

Talbot died unexpectedly in l'Ange Gardien, Que. on 24 March 1917 (obit. l'Action Catholique [Quebec City], 24 March 1917, 16; Le Soleil [Quebec City], 26 March 1917, 6). A list of several of his projects underway in 1894 appeared in the local newspaper called L'Electeur [Quebec], 28 Dec. 1894, 4. The Archives Nationales du Quebec in Quebec City holds an large collection of architectural drawings by Talbot for the period from 1884 to 1906, and by Talbot & Dionne covering the period from 1906 to 1917.
