Bridgman, Charles Saunders

BRIDGMAN, Charles Saunders (1875-1965) was born in Toronto and trained in London, Ont. with the firm of McBride, Jones & Farncomb from 1892 until 1900. He moved to New York City and studied under Emanuel L. Masqueray, the Paris-born architect who had worked in the office of Carrere & Hastings and then conducted his own atelier in New York. In 1903 Bridgman returned to Canada and opened an office in Winnipeg where, for the next thirty years, he sustained a successful practice designing institutional, ecclesiastical and residential works. These included many landmark apartment blocks such as the DeBary Apartments (1912), a unique complex designed in the Queen Anne Revival style incorporating an exterior light court positioned on a diagonal off the corner lot. In 1937 Bridgman returned to London, Ont. and later collaborated with his brother L. Gordon Bridgman on several projects. He retired in 1955 and died in London on 17 October 1965 (obit. Free Press [London], 18 Oct. 1965, 25; biog. and list of works Winnipeg Telegram, 18 Sept. 1906, 55)
