BRENAN, Herbert Stanley (1879-1959) active in Saint John, N.B., was born there and trained in the office of R.C. John Dunn (in 1898-1902). He joined F. Neil Brodie in 1901 and for the next twenty-five years worked as his chief assistant, learning much about the design of school buildings erected throughout the Maritimes. When Brodie died in 1926 Brenan was the logical successor to the practice which he continued to operate until after 1950. He executed several commissions for the Saint John School Board, and for them designed his most important work, the Saint John High School, a creditable interpretation of the neo-Georgian style. Brenan retired in 1958 and died in Saint John on 25 Aug. 1959 (obit. Evening Times-Globe [Saint John], 26 Aug. 1959, 17 & 23; biog. New Brunswick Blue Book and Encyclopedia, 1932, 44)
