Benoit, Joseph E. Alexandre

BENOIT, Joseph E. Alexandre (1876-1949) was active in Montreal where he first practiced in a partnership with Charles E. Fournier in 1896-98 (see list of works under Fournier & Benoit). Born in Montreal in 1876, he studied architecture and construction at the Ecole Polytechnique in that city and graduated in 1898. From 1900 until c. 1910 he lived and worked in St. Jean, Que., then moved to Montreal and maintained an office there until after 1940. He specialised in the planning of school buildings for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Montreal, but many of his designs were rudimentary and undistinguished by refinements of architectural scholarship. Benoit died at St. Jean on 15 March 1949 (obit. La Presse [Montreal], 16 March 1949, 36; obit. Montreal Daily Star, 16 March 1949, 19; obit. Gazette [Montreal], 17 March 1949, 13; obit.
