BELLHOUSE, David Wynard (1861-1952), son of an artist Richard T. Bellhouse, was born in the town of Sale, Borough of Trafford, near Manchester, Engl. on 22 April 1861 and educated in Stuttgart, Germany and at Neuchatel, Switzerland. He articled in architectural offices in Bruges, Belgium and in London, Engl. and graduated from the Royal Academy School in 1882. After emigrating to Canada in 1883 he was a homesteader at Cypress River, Man. until 1896 when he moved to Winnipeg to join the engineering department of the Canadian Pacific Railway. He worked briefly for Samuel Hooper, then opened his own office in Winnipeg in 1906 where his works included a substantial Italian Romanesque design for St. Edward's Roman Catholic congregation (1913). In 1926 he was noted as the architect for the Ruskin Row mansion of N.J. Weidman "...one of largest houses to be built in Winnipeg " (Winnipeg Daily Tribune, 18 May 1926, 1).
Bellhouse was one of the founding members of the Manitoba Assoc. of Architects in 1914 and served as President of the organization in 1918 and again in 1933.
