Barber, Robert Banks

BARBER, Robert Banks (1836-1913), was born in Ireland and arrived in Stratford, Ont. in the 1870's to work as a carpenter and builder. From 1896 until his death he was listed in Stratford City Directories as an architect, and he completed a variety of commissions there. His design for the bell tower of St. James Anglican Church, Mornington Street, while not highly original in its conception, does indicate his sympathetic understanding of the precepts of the Gothic Revival style, and its dignified silhouette remains a landmark on the Stratford skyline. He died there on 10 April 1913 (obituary in Stratford Daily Herald, 10 April 1913, 3; Stratford Beacon, 10 April 1913, 5)
