Baker, George Edwin

BAKER, George Edwin (1844-1928) was an important regional architect in western Prince Edward Island. The son of John Baker, he was born in Bedeque, P.E.I. and began work as a carpenter and travelled extensively through Colorado, the western United States and British Columbia before returning to Summerside, P.E.I. He was an exponent of the Gothic Revival, adept at executing ecclesiastical designs modeled after the prototype for the small English parish church, but usually carried out in the Maritime tradition of wood frame construction rather than stone or brick. Following his death at Summerside on 1 December 1928 he was buried there at People's Protestant Cemetery (obituary in Evening Patriot [Charlottetown] 4 Dec. 1928, 7).
